A classic example of the "mistaken man thriller." The 39 Steps begins as Richard Hannay (Robert Donat) meets a woman while attending a music hall performance by "Mr. Memory." The next morning, he finds his lovely overnight guest dying - with a knife in her back. Fleeing the thugs who followed her - and the police who think he's comitted the murder - Hannay escapes to Scotland by train, using a map the dead woman was carrying. He meets Pamela (Madeleine Carroll), an unwilling accomplice. They travel across Scotland to another performance by "Mr. Memory, who's answer to what the 39 steps are brings the film to its smashing conclusion.
